Navi Practices answers

How do I find a therapist who takes UnitedHealthcare?

Call Navi at 888-505-NAVI (6284). A navigator reviews your UnitedHealthcare plan and looks for therapists who accept it and are taking new clients. The navigation call is free. Coverage is checked before you are matched.

UnitedHealthcare, UHC, United, and Optum

People say UHC or United for UnitedHealthcare. Its mental health benefits are usually administered by Optum Behavioral Health (formerly United Behavioral Health), often via the Live and Work Well portal — so your therapy benefit may say Optum even though your card says UnitedHealthcare. It is the same plan.

UnitedHealthcare also includes commercial plans and other products that do not all contract the same way. Bring your member ID so the navigator can check the plan you actually have.

A navigator verifies your specific plan and whether a provider is accepting that coverage. Navi does not guarantee that every product from a named insurer, or every clinic, is in-network.

UnitedHealthcare plan types and what they mean for therapy

Choice Plus and Options PPO plans usually let you see any licensed therapist, often include out-of-network benefits, and need no referral. Choice and many HMO plans cover in-network providers only and may expect a referral. EPO plans are in-network only; high-deductible plans may mean you pay the full rate until the deductible is met.

Tell the navigator which UnitedHealthcare plan you have so they can verify the right network.

Frequently asked questions

Is UnitedHealthcare mental health handled by Optum?
Usually, yes. UnitedHealthcare's behavioral health benefits are typically administered by Optum Behavioral Health (formerly United Behavioral Health). You still use your UnitedHealthcare plan and member ID — Optum is the administrator, not a different insurer.
What insurances do you accept?
We work with all insurances—Medicaid, Medicare, commercial plans, and even out-of-pocket options. Our navigators will help you understand your coverage and find in-network providers.
How quickly can I get an appointment?
Most people get scheduled within a week. We prioritize urgent cases and work hard to find the fastest available appointments based on your needs and preferences.
